How to Stand Out on Job Shadow Day by Carol Carter
Make a Good First Impression. When you meet people, look them in the eye and firmly shake their hands. This can be hard to get used to, so practice at home and with your friends. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will feel. This is the first impression that people in the company will get of you, so you want to make it positive from the get-go.
Ask Questions. Ask as much as you can of each person you meet, from the security guard to the assistant to the manager of the company. Learning to ask questions will give you a lot of information that can help you with your own career choices. It will also let the people you meet know that you are truly interested in learning about them, their career path and their roles in the company.
Be Appreciative. People are taking time to give you much needed exposure to what they do every day. Send a thank-you note to everybody who was helpful to you once your Job Shadow Day is done. Showing your gratitude is a tremendous way to show your appreciation to the people who have generously given their time to you.
If you follow each of these steps and convey your unique gifts and talents as a person, you will have a great day, you will learn a lot and most of all, you will leave a very positive impression with the people you meet. If that happens, they will be much more willing to go to bat for you in the future to help create other opportunities for you.
