How to Stand Out on Job Shadow Day
    by Carol Carter

It's your Job Shadow Day, and perhaps you have some butterflies about how your mentor and his coworkers may see you. Here's how you can come across in the most positive light possible:

Dress for Success. Even if you are shadowing people in a "casual" dress company, it is always good to err on the side of being professionally dressed. Wear a suit, and keep the jewelry and multiple sets of earrings to a minimum. You may think this curtails your own sense of personal expression, but it will open the greatest number of doors for you. So think carefully about how you want to present yourself. Make sure your personal appearance is neat, your clothes are ironed and cleaned, and your hair is combed and orderly.

Have a Positive Attitude. People are drawn to helping students who are upbeat and exhibit an attitude that will allow them to create their own destiny. Students who are negative, cynical, overconfident or overbearing are not the people who employers want to help or hire. If you are shy, don't worry. Practice asking questions and shaking hands with people in your own family or your personal friends. You will take a big step in overcoming your shyness by fully participating in this day with an open mind and a positive outlook. Plenty of shy, introverted people are now running some of the world's leading global businesses. We all have to work through our reservations, and these kinds of experiences will help you do that and build your confidence.
